To raise children or not to raise children

7/29/2011

I had a dream last night that I was raising two children - and these children weren't so much children as they were demons! They were such terrors. I couldn't believe it.

Thankfully, it was a dream.

I like to think that if I have children, they will be both extremely cute and extraordinarily well-behaved. But one can never know for certain. Having kids is a big roll of the dice. You just hope you land on sixes (or whatever is the good number in dice rolling).

Anyway, the real reason for this post (aside from my nightmarish children I dreamt about last night) is this article I read awhile back about having kids. Click on the baby to be redirected.

So - I just don't know if I want kids. I know for certain that I am in no place financially to have them soon. There's obviously part of me that wants a family - I want to have kids and share in the joys and pains of raising them with a partner. But on the other hand, part of me just wants to have a partner - and travel and maybe raise dogs - and not worry about daycares and money for college (which, I'm still paying off for myself - btw).

So that's a big up-in-the-air question. And I know that for some people, it's a deal-breaker. You either want kids or you don't. But for me for right now - I'm still debating this one. And I that's also why I didn't include it in this site's criteria (I know that some online dating sights have it in their filtered searches) - but to me, I'm open to dating a guy who wants kids and a guy who doesn't. And I guess it would be something we'd have to discuss and figure out as we got to know each other.

Oh Stargate Universe. I think you're great. I'm really upset that I only have four more episodes to watch before I'm done with you forever. Give my regards to Netflix for streaming you. I hope you don't poorly or I'll probably delete this post - but for now, let's just let these feelings go where they will.

(Don't worry Battlestar Galactica - you're still my favorite. And I miss you so much it hurts sometimes.)

The Gym & Peanut Butter

I actually went to the gym tonight... to work out... Who am I!?!

Let's be honest - it wasn't a "real" workout - I walked on the stairstepper (Stair Master?) for 25 minutes. And damn was I sweating by the end of it. You'd think I was running a marathon. That's how sad my life has become - I'm sweating profusely after 25 minutes of climbing stairs that go nowhere.

In other news, did you  know how many calories are in peanut butter? Because it's honestly offensive.

I love peanut butter - but damn. I don't love it enough to use it as much as I have been up until now. I mean, I'll be honest. I always knew that peanut butter wasn't the healthiest of all the butters - and I use it a little too liberally - but cripes. It is ungodly the caloric wallop that a single sandwich with five/six teaspoons of peanut butter packs.

Peanut Butter, you and I are definitely fighting.

Tree!

I decided to attempt climbing a tree for the first time in a long time.

Potential 122-er, you should know this fact about me: I was never a big tree-climber - and this video let's you clearly see why.

Thanks to my friend Sherri for the constant words of encouragement.
You can't quite make it out at the end of the video - but my arms were a little scratched after that graceful decent.

I can't think of a better way to spend a Thursday night than watching period dramas on Netflix and crocheting?

Here are a few scarves I was able to finish. Sure it's officially summer now. And sure I may or may not have started two of the above pictured scarves nearly six months ago - but who's really paying attention to that stuff?

Getting Ready For An Uneventful Day

I am still on the cusp of a cold. I have a sore throat and a cough - but that's about it. Sexy. I know.

One of my friends let me borrow her hair straightener - so I tried it this morning. I did a poor job of it. I'll have to get someone to help me from now on - or practice. I guess I could practice. But what a strange thing to practice.

Also, just so you know - I always wear my wallet in the left-side back pocket of my pants. However, today, the pants I'm wearing don't have a left-side back pocket - so I have to wear my wallet on the right - and that will bug me all day long.

See how hard my life is? I can't straighten my own hair OR wear my wallet the way I want to.

And if this is what I have to talk about on here - just wait until we go on a date! Wow. I am the LIFE of the party.

Alright, so that was sarcasm because my life isn't as exciting as it could be. Which is why I'm going SKYDIVING in AUGUST!!!   YOW!!!

Of Course This Happened

I had rehearsal tonight for the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles - as well as auditions for solos (which went well, by the way - but I still don't know if I got one or not). Regardless, I have to leave right from work without much time to grab food beforehand - so I usually just eat a granola bar in the car on the way. Not a big deal, right?

WRONG.

As I was climbing BACK into my car tonight after rehearsal was over - I noticed something on my seat, so I went to brush it off - and it didn't move. It was slightly smeared on the seat - and then it hit me - a chocolate chip must have fallen from the granola bar (because you know my fat ass isn't getting the good granola bars, I'm getting the fatty ones that have chocolate and peanut butter) and underneath me as I was driving.

WHICH COULD ONLY MEAN ONE THING.

If it had gotten on my seat - there's an OUTSTANDINGLY GOOD chance that it had also gotten on my pants. And I just spent over three hours in a room with 200 other guys. And I probably have chocolate all over my backside.

That's when the little voice inside my head tried to reason with me. "Oh, come on Steve - it clearly didn't get on your pants. Someone would have said something - even just a snarky comment - something." - and then the voice found logic and said  "Unless they were making the snarky comments BEHIND YOUR BACK - WHERE THE CHOCOLATE IS!!!"

So I rushed home - hoping against hope that somehow the chocolate had only melted/smeared on my car seat and had magically left my pants unstained.

Boy, was I wrong.

Not Shit.

Anyway, thanks Granola Bars for keeping me good and single (and fat).

Sincerely,
Steve

Back From Central Coast

I spent this weekend with Sherri and Jane in the Santa Maria area wine tasting and just basically relaxing. Jane is leaving us so soon - so we have to cram in all our fun in the next few days.

If  you enjoy wine then you really should travel to Los Olivos and/or tour the Foxen Wine Trail. It’s a lot of fun, the people are nice, and the wine is amazing.

We made a near obligatory trip to Saarlos & Sons – not really so much for their wine (which is ok), or the fact that they are one of the few places in Los Olivos with a restroom for customers, or the fact that they have an awesome patio/porch to hang out and talk - but because of Enjoy Cupcakes.

Here’s a pic of the Saarlos & Sons house.

Enjoy Cupcakes is based inside the large Saarlos house and I’m telling you – these cupcakes are amazing. They do a cupcake/wine pairing – and it’s pretty awesome. Some of flavors on this trip were Chocolate Blackberry Syrah, Cherry Lime Chardonnay, Chocolate Coconut Haystack, and Rootbeer Float.

So that was Saturday – and then Sunday we toured the Foxen Wine Trail – with an obligatory stop at Foxen Winery – because Foxen’s wine is seriously awesome.

Here’s a picture of the foxen 7200 tasting room.

In any case, there’s a fact about me for this weekend – I love wine and cupcakes.

My friend Sherri is on her way now to pick me up for brunch. Although, it's 1:05p... so technically I think it's more like just lunch - but brunch is so much more fun. So I'm still going to call it brunch. (God, I love brunch.)

After we eat, we will be seeing "Gypsy" at a theater in Hollywood. I'm pretty excited to see this show. I've never actually seen it live - and I've never been to this theater - and it's a musical... so it's shaping up to be a pretty exciting experience.

And finally - today after 5p, I have to call in to see if I get to report for Jury Duty tomorrow. I'm so excited. I love Jury Duty and I really hope they pick me. I honestly think I would be the best juror.

Fact About Me #2,945

I can't watch other people brush their teeth - it makes my teeth hurt.

(I know, it's weird - and my teeth don't hurt when I brush my own teeth - but watching others is just painful. What if they're using too much force? Ugh, just thinking about it gives me jitters.)
